About me

Yo, I'm K2...

I mix old-school sculpting techniques with tech like 3D printing, animation, and interactive media to dig into how our sense of self is shaped by the virtual spaces we live in.

K2 is about exploring those very specific spaces — where identity isn’t fixed and an individual is everything and nothing at once; It’s about rejecting the idea that there’s only one way to be.

In a world where everything's connected but somehow feels more isolated than ever, I want my work to ask:

Who are we really when everything is up for reinvention?

Where did K2 come from?

If it wasn't obvious by how I look, I was really big into Gorillaz. So much so that I made my own little guy based on Jamie Hewlett's style.

<--- This here was the first ever sketch I made of the guy (then unnamed).

I even eventually ended up putting him up in a "mural".

Why the name?

To understand where the name came from, you gotta know a couple things about me:

  1. My real name sounds a lot like "Kyle"
  2. I went to the other side of the planet for college

So there I was, first class in a new country. I can remake myself into absolutely anything. Nobody here knows me or much about the place I come from. I'm a blank canvas!

Wait... I've seen that guy before... I met him at a dorm mixer the other night. His name was...

KYLE

Anyway to summarize, this guy Kyle establishes to the class that my name is Kyle too. Not to mention yet another Kyle ended up being in this class.

I didn't mind it, there's worse things to be called.

"We should come up with nicknames for you guys"
"How 'bout we call you Alpha Kyle"
"I guess that'd make you Beta Kyle, huh"

.

I must fight this.

Okay, no. I can’t do this. If I don't come up with something in the next 5 minutes, I'm about to be called Beta Kyle for the next 4 years. After some brainstorming, me and a think tank I had recruited from some disparate college students around me came up with a name:

It was perfect. It coincidentally synced with a different part of my name. It was the hardest mountain to climb. It's a synthetic weed. Plus I rollerblade and happened to own a pair of K2s.

I had taken control of my identity and forged a strange new path in my life.
